1.In case of fixed partition/variable partition, suppose all holes(say 5 holes) are filled and one hole is of size 5kb and there we stored a 4kb process so here it will be of internal fragmentation of 1kb so can we also conclude here that there is also external fragmentation of 1kb in the memory. It means can it be possible that there is internal and external fragmentation are same  in memory??

 

2. Can we say if there is internal fragmentation in memory then external fragmentation must be there but if there is external fragmentation in memory there need not be internal fragmentation??

Answer of 1st question : its not medetry, it can be possible there is internal and external fragmentation are both same in memory  in some cases.

Answer of 2nd question : i am not sure ....but yes...its true  

 if there is internal fragmentation in memory then external fragmentation must be there but if there is external fragmentation in memory there need not be internal fragmentation.

But here I have one correction that external fragmentation occurs only when there is a new process requirement. I mean if we have separate slots of some sizes (total -9kb) and new process wants 9kb then in case of fixed partitioning we wont be able to allocate. So in case of fixed partitioning, you may say it there is internal fragmentation then external fragmentation must be there. But in case of dynamic partitioning that space of external fragmentation can be reutilised based on the request.
As per reference book "external fragmentation exists when there is enough total memory space to satisfy a request but the available spaces are NOT CONTIGUOUS."

Overall it depends whether its a static partitioning or dynamic.
Question: For all cases size of Internal fregmentation = size of external fregmentation ?
Answer: Yes for contiguous memory allocation (both static and dynamic)
